An airhostess (woman) and steward (man) are hosts on an airplane who hospitably look after the passengers in flight and tend to their comfort and requirements.

Job Profile

Air cabin crew look after the welfare, comfort and safety of passengers travelling in the aircraft.
  • Preflight briefing - They are briefed by the captain on expected weather conditions, special passenger problems etc.
  • They check emergency equipment in the aircraft.
  • The aircraft and toilets are tidied and seat pocket information put in place.
  • Meals and beverage for the number of passengers on board is checked.
  • First-aid kits and other emergency equipment are checked.
  • They greet passengers coming aboard, check their tickets, and assist them in storing carry-on luggage.
  • When passengers are seated, they check that doors are closed and seat belts fastened.
  • Before take-off they demonstrate the use of emergency equipment and point out exit doors and notify the pilot when they are ready for take-off.
Inflight:
  • They serve meals and drinks. Meals are usually pre-packed and stored in hot cases.
  • Sell duty-free goods such as alcohol, perfume and tobacco.
  • Make announcements on behalf of the pilot, and before landing they check that safety belts are fastened.
  • Deal with emergencies such as the ill health of passengers
  • In case of flight emergencies they are trained to immediately apply the safety drills and help passengers vacate the aircraft before leaving themselves.
On landing:
  • They check stocks of duty-free goods.
  • Complete account sheets showing balance of cash and stock.
  • Prepare reports on medications given to passengers, lost and found articles, and cabin equipment conditions.
  • Senior flight attendants are working supervisors aboard planes- directing the work of junior attendants while performing some of the same duties.

National and some international airlines recruit cabin crew by calling for applications through leading newspapers -
Graduates in the age group of 19-25 years for training. International Airlines recruit airhostesses in the age group of 18-35 years.

Good language, ability and proficiency in English, Hindi, a regional language and at least one foreign language are essential requirements for inflight crew members working for National or International carriers. Physical requirements - Height for Air Hostesses - minimum of 157.5 cm and Flight Pursers 163 cm with proportionate weight.

Normal eyesight without glasses or a minimum uncorrected distant vision of 6/40 is acceptable.
Selection
National Carriers - Scrutinise applications and conduct written test comprising of general knowledge, mental ability and verbal ability for shortlisted candidates. This is followed by an interview and group discussion.

International airlines conduct a preliminary interview during which the measurement of height and weight of the applicants is checked and candidates then take a written test which consists of general knowledge, mental ability, language ability (including vocabulary, listening, reading, speaking test for Hindi and English). This is followed by a main interview, during which the candidate's language fluency, diction, voice, communication skill, personality and reaction to adverse situations is assessed. Candidates are expected to have good knowledge of the aviation industry.
Training - Selected candidates are trained by airlines. At various stages of training, practical and written tests are taken. After completion of the initial course, entrants have to go through a probationary period of on-the-job training with the airline under the supervision of experienced cabin crew for between six months to a year.
